I never fully realized the power of the humble curtain until I started Staging. For me, I always loved the look of bare windows and, to be honest, found other ways to spend the money that probably should have been set aside for window coverings. But, wow! When I started my Staging business, I quickly learned that one of the fastest and easiest ways to update a space wasn’t through paint, it was through updated window treatments.
Check out the difference they make…
Now, obviously more than just the window treatments were changed, but notice how the windows look so small with the green curtains hung just above the window and hanging to the bottom of the window. Look at what happens to the windows on the right when the panels are mounted close to the ceiling and hang to the floor. Amazing! Not only do they make the windows look larger, they make the ceilings feel higher.

Make Them A Tall Drink of Water…
So, before I share my favorite sources for great window panels at a great price, just a reminder. If you want a high end look to your window panels, you will want to mount them as close to the ceiling as possible. I tend to find that 3 inches from the ceiling or bottom of crown moulding usually gives you enough clearance to lift your decorative rod into the brackets.
Add height to your ceiling: for a home with 8 foot ceilings you will want to purchase 94-96 inch panels.
84-inches which are in most stores are only long enough to typically be mounted just above the window like the green ones in the picture above. This cuts off your line of sight at the top of the windows, making the ceilings feel short. When selling, we want the windows to seem larger and prettier and the ceilings soar.
And Remember, Wide Is Good
I like to mount the brackets for my curtain rod at least 6-8 inches from the outside of the window trim. This way, when you hang the panels, they hang just at the inside of the window trim and stretch 6″ out beyond the window. This makes the window seem so much wider and lets in the most amount of light possible. Which, if you have been reading my blog long enough, you know is hugely important when staging your house.
Here are some of my favorite sources and styles for you windows for under $50 per panel which in the world of window treatments is a HUGE bargain!
